If it was possible to get every active Opponaut together, each with his or her car (where applicable) and money was not a factor, what would we do and where would we meet?
I think it's a safe bet that we would spend a day at the 'Ring (or another track if we don't want to be so unoriginal) with an ongoing 'best lap' competition. We'd all set out together for at least one lap at first, but then we'd probably go back to our meeting spot to hang out. Anyone who still wants to drive can do so, and for the rest of us there's a buffet, some video games, live coverage of any actual races going on at the time, some Cards Against Humanity (because of course), a spot to trade Hot Wheels, car parts, etc. and buy Oppo stickers directly, and a couple 3D printers and/or more basic shop tools that are free to use for just whatever. Also, we would have access to Top Gear's Astra for the day, and whoever set the best time in it would win the Stig's suit and helmet. Because that would be pretty cool, too.

The Internet. We'd be digitally transfered into it, which...is pretty much what we're already doing.

The Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey or the Circuit de la Sarthe are good choices, too.

Could you imagine a Ford Motor Company Engineer from the 60's hearing about a 1968 Mercury Montego on the 'Ring in present day?
He'd probably have a heart attack from laughing.
I'm betting I would have about a 45 minute lap time LOL

Ahem:
Step 1: Meet up at stance car meet.
Step 2: Make fun of stance car meet.
Step 3: All get shanked.
Step 4: Make it to FP in the next big internet/automotive scandal

Being from Connecticut, I humbly recommend Lime Rock Park as our track of choice.

I think it would be interesting to race you in my old car, assuming I'll get it working again after its current semi-permanent slumber in storage. How does a 54 hp when new bone stock mk2 Golf sound? I imagine you murdering me on the straights, and me making back lots of time when braking and cornering.

It's in the middle of the country (sorry rest-of-worlders!) and has bbq.

Also, MURICA.

I'll take the bet. It accelerates like a maniac. I'll gamble on the American Muscle.
Also, it has the Cyclone GT (Grand Touring) package on it.
You know, power steering and sway bars. No.. no... it did not come with power brakes...or even disc brakes...and is prone to overheating...
lol LETS DO THIS! Where do you live we need to find a track to get onto together, it could be hysterical.

In-N-Out Burger near some California hills driving roads that lead to Nevada and high speeds.

Money not a factor?
Obviously, we'd rent out VIR or Sebring or Sonoma or Laguna Seca for a day, track our rides, and have an "Opponaut in a Reasonably Priced Miata" track time competition.

It appears his is more shippable...giving I don't know if mine even fits in a shipping container...and you can place his on a FedEx Scale (by picking it up)

Oh FUCK YES . Welcome to the Oppo Matrix. Drive whatever you want whenever you want however you want. 'Ring runs in this corner, Impreza 'muddin in that corner, 5 Cylinder Audi rallying in that corner, NASCARs over here, F1s over there, Street racing everywhere,....gahhhh why couldn't I be born to a multi-billion dollar family so's I could have some money to throw at R&Ding thiiiis

Wait. I thought boats could sail?
![]() 01/16/2014 at 15:57 |

My money would be on you as well, unless there's a huge difference in driver competence in my advantage. Which I very strongly doubt. Still, it would be hilarious. I would like to install my hotter cam though, bumping it from its 54 to 68 or so ponies!

Well, they can sail or they can motor. :S

I think I'll allow that upgrade.
I wonder though, It may not be quick but does it have top speed? (I know nothing about them).
My 3 speed transmission may run out of top end gearing...

If money was no object I would say Le Mans, France for the 24 followed by us running our own cars on the course. Or maybe run our cars before the race so we can enjoy frosty adult beverages during the race.
If this were actually going to happen I would say COTA would be a good spot. Relatively central in the US and easy to get to for everyone. Maybe followed by the F1 race?

I tried it on the German Autobahn in 2012. 151 km/h (94 mph) top speed according to my GPS, about 160 according to the car itself. It's got a 4-speed manual. I bet you can match that easily.
![]() 01/16/2014 at 16:12 |
|
hmmm I've taken it to about 75 mph and it's really high in it's RPM range (not that I have a tach to tell me, but I do have ears). It will shift into it's 3rd and final gear at 43 mph. I'm not saying it's going to take a long time to get to 75, but I don't know that I'd take it past 80. I just don't think the engine would sustain such high RPMs.
I would have to play with gearing if I wanted it to do any serious high speeds. I don't even take it on the freeway here because of that. It's really not happy over 70 mph (our speed limit here in Michigan, USA). You may have another advantage in your pocket!

That'd be raw. The 'Ring was my first thought too...then..."Would my car even make it one lap around that monstrously long track?"..."Maybe Laguna Seca would be more appropriate"
![]() 01/16/2014 at 16:24 |

How about Austin? We could rent out COTA, drink Shiner, and have Franklin's BBQ and Plucker's cater the whole thing. Plus, there are now In-N-Out locations there!
